Translated literally, Songahm means pine tree and rock.  The meaning behind each of the Songahm colour belt forms or patterns progressing from white to black belt is likened to the growth of a pine tree from seed to full maturity.  The forms progress in a logical manner with the gradual introduction of new kicks and hand techniques.  Beginners are introduced to sparring with an opponent through one-step sparring, a short sequence of predetermined moves.  This is a safe, structured precursor to free-sparring.  Upon reaching the rank of camo belt, student begin to free spar, but continue to develop their awareness of distance and timing through one-step sparring.  From purple belt, students are expected to demonstrate speed, power and good technique to break one or more boards in order to advance in rank.  Black belts have additional requirements that include weapons forms.

In addition to the physical requirements, all students are required to complete some form of community service prior to each rank testing.  We have also recently introduced our association's life skills curriculum.  Each month, we focus on a particular attribute or quality which we expect to see in our students inside and outside the do-jang such as loyalty, respect and integrity.
